Pick one drawer. Just one. This is a small reset you can finish before the kettle boils a second time.

Ten minutes, well spent

  1. Minutes 1–2: Empty the drawer onto a towel. Wipe out the crumbs and dust.
  2. Minutes 3–5: Group like with like. Put anything that belongs elsewhere in a small basket to return later.
  3. Minutes 6–8: Put the things you reach for most at the front. Reuse small boxes or trays you already have.
  4. Minutes 9–10: Remove obvious rubbish, return the basket of misplaced things, and close the drawer.

The well chosen detail

Leave a little empty space. You don’t need a perfectly fitted set of containers to make the drawer easier to use.

Before you buy an organizer

Measure the inside width, depth and usable height of the drawer. Notice rails or a lip that reduce the clearance. A box that fits on paper can still stop a shallow drawer from closing.

Try a small carton or a container you already have before buying a matching set. If it makes the drawer easier to use for a week, you have a useful size and shape to shop for. Put the daily items at the front and leave room for your hand to reach them.

Storage to compare

The light-bamboo box has a fiberboard bottom with bamboo veneer and needs a deep drawer or shelf. Some small IKEA items have online minimum quantities; check the basket total and collection options.
